Things You Need to Know About Concrete Floor Grinder and Polishing

Concrete floors are often the choices made for warehouse structures and commercial building as well as in some residential areas. The most apparent reason is the material's durability. As compared to other flooring materials, concrete does not really call for much laborious maintenance work either. However, this does not necessarily mean that concrete is invincible. As a matter of fact, it calls for regular cleaning and polishing as well and there is no better equipment for the job than a concrete floor grinder.

To maintain the shine and keep the concrete floor clean, regular polishing is necessary. With a concrete floor grinder, you can remove the dust and pits as well as correct the imperfections that the floor may have developed over time. Here are some tips for a successful concrete grinding.

Get the equipment

Not everyone has the proper concrete polishing equipment for the job for the simple reason that it is expensive. But that does not mean you have to do the job manually. You may opt to rent the equipment instead.

Understand the polishing process

These polishing machines are made of disks put together using diamond bits. That is what grinds the concrete floor down to reach the level of shine you want to achieve. Now, there are different levels of polishing disks. The higher the number indicated the finer the grit. Use the finer grits to achieve a glossy finish.

The first one you should use is the coarser grits. These grits are responsible for removing the stains, pits and other imperfections. After this process of coarse polishing, you can move on to the next level until your concrete floor is ready for the final polishing.

In the process of polishing, you may want to use hardeners too. This should follow after the first stage of grinding. This additional step will help with the floor's protection. It can make it slightly dust and water resistant.

If the concrete floor is particularly porous or has a wavy surface or if it calls for some serous patching job, you should perform a concrete floor repair first. These kinds of surfaces are not recommended for polishing. Wait for 28 days after the repair job before proceeding into grinding the floor.

Choose a suitable polishing method

You can choose between polishing the concrete floor wet or dry. An advantage of using the wet method is that the water can serve as a natural lubricant which will reduce the friction between the grinder and the floor. Such will lengthen the lifespan of the polishing equipment. But the major downside is it can get seriously messy. On the other hand, while dry grinding presents less mess, it can work against the polishing equipment especially in the long run.

Some people do not choose one over the other. Dry grinding is performed first before the wet polishing. Some concrete floor grinder equipments though are designed to have resin bonded disks which makes them less prone to damage due to friction. So, ultimately, you have to know the kind of equipment you are using.
